Design Trends for 2014

By Christa Sorauf

We love the holidays but we’re also very excited about 2014. January used to be one of my least favorite months until we started going to the Americas Mart over 10 years ago. Now, it’s a great way to kick off a new year and so exciting to see the new design trends. The Atlanta Market is followed by Maison D’Objet in Paris and Ambiente in Frankfurt and then we’ll receive complete trend reports from the companies that we design product lines for and we’ll share them here with you. In the meantime, you can find some design directions that will be trending in 2014…

Bejeweled Kitchens — kitchens have gone from functional to fabulous with gorgeous new finishes and incredible new materials. I love this one from one of our favorite designers and South Carolina native Kelly Wearstler…

Agate — we’re seeing this everywhere and we’ve already fallen for it ourselves with the creation of our LACQUER LOVE BOXES

Honey Wood — wood is warming up and it only makes sense since gold is also back in a big way…

Turquoise — I’ve always loved this color and it’s showing up on the radar. We’re working on a teenage girl’s bedroom that was just painted turquoise and it’s like stepping inside an incredible cocoon of coolness…

Blurred Lines — Love bringing the outside in and the inside out, especially if you live in the south…

This is our last blog for the year so hope you have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We’ll be headed to Atlanta right after the holidays and can’t wait to share everything we find right here with you.

ETSY Design Finds

By Christa Sorauf

We’ve been working on several teenage girl’s bedrooms and we’ve found some amazing pieces and resources on ETSY. For one of the bedrooms, the daughter has requested Lilly Pulitzer prints. The selection of Lilly Pulitzer bedding is very limited but we did find an amazing resource on ETSY where we can order custom made pillows in Lilly prints, you can see an example from the Etsy store below. Would love to share the board but it’s a surprise for Christmas so we’ll share photos from the new room soon…

Installation Transformation

By Christa Sorauf

Almost everyone has a room in their house that they don’t know what to do with so it becomes the repository for orphan furniture, rugs and other stuff. For me, I’m still noodling and doodling our guest room. For our client, it was her living room, which had great bones, chocolate brown walls and a fireplace. The living room also mirrored the dining room located across they foyer. The client is a consummate cook and loves to entertain so when she invited us to look at the space we thought it was the perfect place to enjoy cocktails before one of her incredible dinners and coffee after. We started by relocating the sofas in the room to an office and bedroom…

The blue wing chairs were to stay and we had a beautiful rug custom made for the room by McAbees …

You have to see a close up of the rug because it’s just gorgeous with a subtle blue that brings out the chairs…

When Gregs and I first saw the space we immediate thought CREAM COUCH and had this one made by Century Furniture to flank the fireplace. We also had cream silk drapes made with a peacock blue lead to frame the windows…

Next came the GORGEOUS cocktail table, also from Century Furniture, with a faux SHAGREEN finish and antique mirror top…it’s simply stunning and Shagreen is popping in magazines everywhere…

For the long wall, we chose a limed oak buffet and two lamps from Worlds Away. A painting by Eric Benjamin hangs over the buffet, which has great storage and can be used to serve cocktails and hors d’oeuvres…

Since the dining room mirrors the living room, we pulled the peacock blue into the room by recovering the hostess chairs, you can see the before and after below…

We also found the perfect mirror for the mantle at a local antiques store and relocated the beautiful Eric Benjamin painting to another wall…

These two changes had a dramatic impact on the dining room…

We were able to do the entire installation in just one day and celebrated with our clients and a bottle of wine in their fabulous new living room. Just give us a call if you would like ROOM SERVICE to do an installation transformation for you!
