Monday Blues

By Christa Sorauf

Indigo and navy are not typically colors I gravitate towards in design, but a ROOM SERVICE client loves the color and now she has me singing the blues. I have to admit I have fallen for this deep, rich, moody hue. Navy looks so great with white and cream and if you add a pop of chartreuse, orange or pink, you can create incredibly classic and tailored interiors that are bright and whimsical and never stuffy.

Jonathan Adler has long favored this classic combination and I love these pillows

This navy blue  Chinese Chippendale mirror would add a touch of whimsy to any room…

And this oversized moroccan hand tufted rug would be the perfect complement to the mirror…

I think this Shibori wallpaper is absolutely gorgeous and will be looking for an excuse to use…

And when I feeling blue about my wardrobe I might have to try this Tory Burch Rosemary Dress on for size. I love the longer hemline and polished silhouette but the glittered stones, sequins and fringed threads add glamorous and unexpected touches to a classic that you can wear for years to come.

ShaGREEN with Envy!

By Christa Sorauf

One of the major trends at Maison D’object in Paris this year was shagreen — this fabulous finish was simply everywhere. Shagreen is the pebbly hide of a stingray or dogfish. First used by the Turks to cover sword handles, the exotic material has been used for hundreds of years by cabinetmakers, whose veneered desks, armchairs, and even a grand piano proved that beauty was, marvelously, skin deep. At Jolie Kolaj, we love exotic finishes because they add an interesting depth to any interior. We just ordered this gorgeous cocktail table below for a client and it’s going to be stunning…

Table

I found these beautiful shagreen trays and they would look great on a console or ottoman…

You can even wear this trend with the bracelets

Bracelets

Or carry it by your side with this cute little clutch with a yummy pop of color…

It’s a trend that makes us ShaGREEN with Envy!

New Artwork: Coco Chanel

By Christa Sorauf

Gregs and I worked on a new painting that combines our love of vintage papers, witty sayings and our scraping technique. When we decided to do this painting we were looking for a style icon and we immediately thought of Coco Chanel. I love everything about Chanel from the clothes and perfume to the fascinating Coco who remains such an inspiration to designers today. When I researched famous quotes by Coco, we found the perfect one, which you’ll see in the last photo.

To start the painting, we used vintage dictionary pages, maps of Paris and fashion images and applied everything to a 36 x 36 canvas.

We then sketched a silhouette of Coco Chanel from an old photography I found.

We used black acrylic to paint the silhouette and add texture.

We then added scrapings of a beautiful pink, white and a fabulous gold acrylic paint.

We finished the painting with Coco’s quote — “YOU LIVE BUT ONCE; YOU MIGHT AS WELL BE AMUSING.”

We love this quote because well, we couldn’t agree more. The painting is now for sale at Les Beaux Art Gallery in the Pendleton Art District. We had so much fun creating this painting that we’ll soon be doing another, which we’ll share with you.
